Gwadar Press Club
A Legacy of Journalism and Advocacy
The Gwadar Press Club stands as one of the oldest press institutions in the region, playing a pivotal role in journalism and media advocacy. Established in 1995, the club has been a stronghold for journalists, providing a platform for press freedom and public discourse.
The History of Gwadar Press Club

The Gwadar Press Club began its formal journey in 1995, marking a turning point in the region’s organized journalism history. It was established under the leadership of Ismail Baloch, with Ismail Sabir Baloch serving as its first president. Other founding members included Maulana Riaz Baloch, Ghulam Muhammad Baloch, Haji Ubaidullah, Akbar Jandani, and Behram Baloch, each playing a key role in laying the foundation of the club.
Initially, the press club operated out of the Mir Ghaus Bakhsh Bizanjo Library, now known as the JEEWS Library. The first press conference held after its formation was led by Abdul Hakeem Lehri, head of the Balochistan National Congress, accompanied by Secretary General Mullah Muhammad Yousuf, addressing regional issues of public concern.
At the time, news reports were typically sent to newspapers via fax or postal mail. Newspapers and radio were the primary sources of information, and journalism was largely free from censorship.
A major milestone came in 2006 when the official building of the Gwadar Press Club was constructed, giving journalists a physical space to carry out their duties. On January 23, 2007, a General Body Meeting of local journalists led to the drafting and approval of the club’s official constitution, setting a strong foundation for governance, transparency, and ethical journalism.
The institutional structure of the club was further strengthened on August 24, 2009, when it formally applied for registration under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. The Government of Balochistan’s Department of Industry and Commerce officially registered the club under registration number 1309, giving it full legal recognition.
Over the years, the Gwadar Press Club has played a vital role in highlighting local issues on national and international media platforms. It remains the only press club in Balochistan after Quetta to hold regular annual elections, ensuring a democratic leadership structure that reflects the voice of the journalist community.
While the media landscape has shifted—from traditional print and radio to computers, laptops, and now social media—the Gwadar Press Club has remained committed to truth, responsibility, and the freedom of the press. However, the growing influence of censorship and media restrictions has made independent journalism more challenging in recent times.
Even so, the Gwadar Press Club continues to stand as a pillar of press freedom, advocating for the rights of journalists and raising awareness about the social and civic issues facing the people of Gwadar.
Role in Journalism & Publications
To amplify journalistic activities and media engagement, the Gwadar Press Club launched a dedicated publication in 2007, titled Takaar – The Journalist. Functioning as the official organ of the club, this periodical has been consistently published, covering a wide range of topics including:
- Public and civic issues
- National affairs and socio-political analysis
- Regional developments and emerging concerns
Despite limited financial resources and technical constraints, the publication continues to uphold the values of constructive journalism. Copies of Takaar are distributed to press clubs across Pakistan, ensuring a wider reach and impactful discourse on pressing matters.
Among press organizations in Balochistan, the Gwadar Press Club is regarded as one of the most active and influential, second only to Quetta Press Club in terms of impact and outreach.
Commitment to Modernization & Press Freedom
Understanding the evolving landscape of journalism, the Gwadar Press Club consistently works to modernize its operations and adapt to contemporary challenges. To keep pace with technological advancements and shifting media dynamics, the club periodically reviews and amends its constitutional policies, ensuring that it meets the needs of modern journalism.
As Gwadar continues to develop as a strategic hub, the Gwadar Press Club remains steadfast in its mission to be the voice of truth, integrity, and press freedom, fostering a free and responsible media landscape in the region.
